What’s going on KAMO and welcome to a new year of tournament season. As the year is getting started that only means one thing and that is preparation time. As an angler who is learning every day, I wonder how other anglers’ prep for their upcoming season, from the beginners to the top anglers that compete in our trail series. What do they do to get ready, how do they plan out their season, what are they doing to get the edge on the competition, and what upgrades to equipment are being made that may give them the possibility of a better outcome? Well I have had the pleasure of speaking with a few anglers from KAMO seeing what they have been up to. To start off, I spoke with Jeremy Mitchell who I had the pleasure of rooming with at the All American tournament at Truman lake, in which he ended up taking first place with over ninety inches of fish and taking home over ten thousand dollars. He has also earned a spot in the KBF THE TEN house which if you don’t know is an honorable achievement filled with some of the top anglers in the kayak fishing industry.  Before we dive into what he is doing in prep for 2021 season I would like to give my personal view of him as an angler. While rooming with Jeremy and watching how he operates I saw that he would interact with everyone but was prompt on getting to sleep every night at 9pm because he had fish to find as he would say. When 4am came around he was up and out the door to go and check his spots while covering what seems like the whole lake. What I learned from Jeremy and I believe other anglers could learn is mental fortitude. Jeremy stays focus on the mission at hand and that is to not waste a single minute, cover water, find the best producing area as possible, and to give it everything you have. In my opinion if your looking to compete at the highest level, well then you have to be willing to do whatever it takes no matter how tired you are, making no excuse, and just leave it all out on the table.  Here is what Jeremy had to say, “Well currently I am prepping for THE TEN and Seminole. I find myself dedicating an hour each day to looking at Navionics and OnX maps to help find those hidden gem areas that other anglers may not see to give me the upper hand.  I’ve been refitting my equipment since I have got home from the Hobie TOC (Tournament Of Champions) in Knoxville.   I am working with a new rod sponsor, Jelsma Rod Company out of Texas and picked up some new Shimano reels to pair up with my new rods. I am still running some of my old Lews and Diawa reels on my other set ups. Mentally I am preparing for two different lakes in Florida, January and February can throw just about anything at you. I am ready to be punching through mats with a 2 oz punch rig as well as skipping weightless plastics around beds for spawning fish. My money is also on a jackhammer or a lipless crankbait being ripped through the grass to hopefully attract those big bites, I can’t wait to see how things line up. On top of fishing KAMO, I will also be competing in some of the national level tournaments. On June 20, 2020, KAMO traveled back to Lake Wappapello for the 2nd year and another Wappapalooza great time. Scott the owner of "The Camp at Wappapello Lake Wappapello was again the main sponsor for the event and truly an outstanding host.  Lake Wappapello is a reservoir on the St. Francis River, formed by Wappapello Dam. Created in 1941, this 8,400-acre lake is located 120 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. The reservoir lies mostly in Wayne County, but its southernmost reaches extend into northern Butler County, both in Missouri. 37 great anglers conversed on this lake which is mainly known for its catfish and crappie while their families and friends enjoyed all the amenities The Camp had to offer.
The water was at normal level, which was quite a change from last year when it was flooded. Tournament day was a grind with the weather exceeding 90 degrees water temps in the mid 80’s and dropping water levels on the main lake. Only 120 fish were submitted throughout the field which averaged just over 3 fish per angler. Many anglers made their way to the upper river section in search of cooler water while others gambled on a summer pattern in the main lake. In the end, Jeremy Mitchell scored the win with 76.50”, as well as Big Bass for the event with his 19" beauty.   Justin Coon followed with 68.25”,  Rick Lemar in 3rd with 67"  and Kori Whitchurch rounded out the top 4 with 66.25".  Congratulations also to our 5th through 10th place anglers who took home over $400.00 in prizes from our amazing sponsors. (not pictured) 5th place S. After the event anglers and their families got together to enjoy an evening of food, music, dancing and fishing stories.   Amidst the Covid 19 pandemic and having to postpone the April tournament, excitement was definitely in the air as 41 anglers geared up and made their way to one of Missouri’s top bass lakes to participate in stop 3 of the KAMO Trail series. Stockton lake is one of Missouri’s top reservoirs located in southeastern Dade County, northeastern Dade County and southwestern Polk County covering 39 square miles, with 298 miles of shoreline. Social distancing was still the requirements and thanks to the TourneyX management system, anglers were able to enjoy a day of kayak bass fishing and seeing their fishing buddy’s while abiding to the restrictions. Joe Bailey took the big bass lead early in the game with a 17.50” keeper with Chris Smith on his tail with a 17.25”. Unfortunately it was not close enough as hour 3, Joe Bailey was able to add to his 5 fish limit a nice 19” largemouth which would eventually give him the numbers to earn himself a 1st place victory! Bailey and Smith, both from the Kansas City area battled it out all day leaving Smith with a second-place finish and a newcomer to the KAMO series Collin Lamkin of Illinois in 3rd place with Justin Jacks of Joplin taking 4th and Shaun Bollinger of Barnhart, Mo. in 5th. Unfortunately Joe did not enter the Big Bass pot so that gave the Big Bass victory to Mr Lamkin.

So you want to be a kayak tournament angler? Sounds easy doesn’t it? I just need a kayak and a fishing pole. I catch fish all the time from my bass boat or at my local pond, right? Well, I was that guy four years ago and got a rude awakening my first tournament. I have been an avid kayaker for over 20 years. Yes, I’m that old. I primarily kayaked only on creeks and rivers in my Perception Patriot 12. It was a great kayak and did what I needed. My first kayak fishing tournament came in 2016 and it was my first time on a large body of water in a plastic boat. I took everything I thought I needed to catch fish. Well, everything that works in the creek and at the pond. I was in awe with all the angler setups. From the sit on top kayaks to “what the hell, that thing has pedals”! Look, are those fish finders? Needless to say, I had my butt handed to me. Mostly because of not being prepared and of my arrogance. Now that I have got the newbies rethinking this easy sport, I will discuss the basics to get started so maybe it will help someone coming into the scene. I am by no means a professional at this sport, but I do have hundreds of hours in the tournament seat. The main focus is to have fun and learn. Kayak: Let’s start with the most important item, the kayak. I cringe when I see a post about “what is the best kayak”. Everyone is going to respond with their brand and the person asking will end up buying the popular suggestion because that’s how people are. I am going to say, GO DEMO AT LEAST 6-10 KAYAKS BEFORE BUYING! Your second or third should have been your first purchase. With all the propulsion options, get a kayak that fits you not everyone else!  PFD: Personal Floatation Device. This is of the highest priority, no questions asked! This is mandatory at any sanctioned tournament. There are only two accepted types: inflatable and standard. You need to make sure it fits comfortably because you will be wearing it for 10-12 hours in different types of weather conditions. Also make sure it floats your body. A sinking PFD does you no good in a time of need.  Measuring Device: Kayak Tournaments are CPR (Catch Photo Release) based. You will need an approved measuring device. Luckily there are only two to choose from. The Hawg Trough and Ketch boards are the only accepted devices.   Your phone required to upload pictures to the tournament scoring server, i.e. TourneyX or IANGLER. Make sure your phone is secured in a weatherproof floating case or a tethered leash. Of course you need fishing tackle. You will eventually figure out how many rods to carry. Some carry 2 or 3 and others can carry up to 10. I’m not going to say you need a fish finder, trolling motor, or any other super cool gadgets to help you win a tournament. That will be for you to decide. The interweb is your friend for how to videos and social media pages for kayak fishing. Do your homework and study the bodies of water you plan on fishing. I use Google maps and Navionics to dissect the water. It is especially helpful when I can’t prefish or have never been on a body of water. Lastly, be proficient with the rules of each tournament for they may change between organizations. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Remember, everyone was a beginner at one time. There is always vast knowledge by seasoned anglers that will be shared. Have fun! Once the fun leaves, the sport is pointless.
2020 is in full swing and means a third year of excitement for the Kayak Anglers of Missouri. We had a record setting membership in 2019 and we are on track to exceed that number in 2020. There are new events planned for the tournament season along with the standard trail series and online series. The first being B.A.S.S. Kayak Series. BASSMASTER has excelled to a new level with their first year in the kayak tournament spotlight. There will be regional and state tournaments with a chance to qualify to fish the Classic.  Also new to KAMO 2020, is the acceptance of youth to fish the trail and online series alongside the adults. Who knows, maybe the 2020 AOY will have to be chauffeured to check in. Check tournament rules for details.  New for 2020 is the All American Kayak Classic, presented by Everharts Outdoors in Clinton, MO. This will be an event with the best of the best competing for a huge payday. For more info, see rules and regulations.  We have again partnered with KBF to give anglers a chance to qualify not only for the National Championship in 2021 but the new KBF Partner Club Championship (more news to come on this so stay tuned!) in October of this year. Anglers Punch Their Ticket To The 2020 KBF National Championship During Stockton Tournament4/30/2019 The first onsite and second leg of the Kayak Anglers of Missouri (KAMO) Trail Series took place April 13, 2019. Anglers had their choice of fishing either Stockton or Pomme De Terre Lakes. The bass were starting to become more active leading up to the tournament until early in the week when an artic blast dropped lake temperatures to the low 50’s and fish that were close to spawning decided to hunker instead. With air temperatures in the 40’s and high winds, this was a mentally and physically tough tournament. Not only did the anglers have to be on their “A” game with their fishing abilities, they also had to use all of their kayaking skills to stay on the spots they needed to fish. The 54 anglers in the tournament caught a total of 181 bass with the Big Bass awarded to Jeff Hook with a 20” fish. It was revealed at the check in that the angler who caught the biggest bass of the year from the onsite tournaments will win a completely decked out kayak!
The overall winner of the tournament was Travis Ueke with a total of 81.50”, earning him those ever-important Angler of the Year (AOY) points. On top of the AOY board is Jeff Hook with a 25 point lead.  It was also announced that since KAMO is a partner club with KBF and there were over 30 participants in this tournament, the top 10% would get invitations to the KBF National Championship 2020 if they were a current KAMO and a KBF member before the start of the tournament. The top 5 spots were given their invitations but only 3 had established KBF memberships. Congratulations to Travis Ueke, Bill Dipman, and Kevin Rockwell who have all punched their ticket to the National Championship! The next Trail Series event will take place at Table Rock Lake May 18th with more points, prizes and money up for grabs.

  After a long, cold, snowy winter, the Kayak Anglers of Missouri (KAMO) season kicked off with the March Online Event. Competitors were eager to get back into competition and try to snag the first Angler of the Year (AOY) points. A very large field of 73 anglers signed up to compete making for a large payout and some serious bragging rights. Those 73 anglers caught a total of 420 bass throughout the month with the largest bass at 21.50 inches caught by Aaron Simms of Saint Robert, Missouri. The lingering winter added a few different challenges but those willing to tough the weather out or drive to open waters still put up some impressive lengths.  In April there are 2 exciting tournaments. The first is the Members Only Online Monthly Challenge where anglers will be competing throughout the whole month for cash, prizes and points. At the end of the Online Monthly Challenge season, which runs through September the top 10% will receive an invitation to compete in the 2019 KAMO Classic Championship. Becoming a member and competing in the Online tournaments are a great way to get started in tournament fishing. Month long online tournaments allow anglers to fish on any Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) public water, alleviating travel requirements and the pressure of having to fish a new body of water and catch all your fish in one day. A month-long opportunity for KAMO members to fish and compete for a spot in the KAMO Classic Championship, earn AOY points, and work towards that chance to be crowned the KAMO Online Angler of the Year, plus opportunities to win more of our fabulous prizes and cash. The monthly online challenges for members only starting in April are a separate series where anglers can fish any MDC managed or assisted waters and earn AOY points too. More information on these challenges is coming soon. As the weather warms up on May 18th, anglers get another shot to test their skills roadrunner style on Table Rock Lake. And again, Angler Of the Year points going out to all KAMO members who enter. Beat the deadline and make sure to register on TourneyX by May 17th, 10:00 pm. Once more, the competition is sure to heat up in June with the Lake Wappapello roadrunner style tournament scheduled for the 15th. Get registered by June 14th to beat the cutoff and be sure to attend the Captain's Meeting to learn what boundaries are in effect and when exactly is the Official FIRST CAST. Anglers are always faced with choices like, which lure? Which rod? Or, which Lake? In this case, fish your choice between Lake Taneycomo, or Bull Shoals on July 13th, in yet another roadrunner style competition. This competition offers chances for prizes, cash, and AOY points. Competitors must attend the Captain's Meeting on June 12th, online, at 6:00 pm. Be sure to look at our 2019 Tournament Schedule Page for all the details. The month of August brings two separate tournaments running back-to-back at Mark Twain Lake, the KBF Regional Trail Event, & the KAMO Trail event on the 3rd.
